Stricken around-the-world yachtsman rescued by navy

(CNN) -- A French yachtsman badly injured during the Vendee Globe solo round-the-world race was rescued Saturday by an Australian Navy ship around 1,400 kilometers (850 miles) south of Perth.

The frigate HMAS Arunta had been dispatched to rescue Yann Elies after he broke his left leg on Thursday when his boat, the Generali, slammed into a wave, knocking him into the deck.

He had managed to drag himself back into the 18-meter vessel's cabin but had been unable to reach any painkillers, food or water. Race officials had classed Elies as being in a life-threatening condition.

Two crew members transferred Elies aboard the Arunta earlier Saturday, according to the Vendee Globe Web site.

Race from Cochin to Singapore: Volvo Ocean Race Leg 3 Begins

Conditions in Cochin were near perfect for the start as the 8 yachts headed out for the next leg of the Volvo Ocean Race to Singapore and a stop over in China followed by a 3000 mile race across the Pacific to Rio,Brazil.

The eight boat fleet were greeted by thousands of local people who came to see the fleet depart.

Before the official start at 1530 local time (1000 GMT) the boats formed a Parade of Sail, which took place in the channel alongside the Race Village.

Thousands of spectators lined the river banks and in the Race Village itself to send the fleet off to Singapore. At sea, Ericsson 4 has taken the lead as the front of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet closes in on the scoring gate. Telefonica Blue remains within shouting distance, while Delta Lloyd is wounded at the back of the pack.

Making an Impact

"It is a unique part of the world and we want to show that through building a race village that can accommodate this race on its first visit to Asia."

The view from the top floor of the Cochin Port Trust building is spectacular, staring out from its vantage point at Willingdon Island over the curves of the Vembanad Lake. It is here where the Trust's chairman, N Ramachandran, has spent the last 10 months co-ordinating the operation to transform a city in south-western India into a host port for a global sporting event.

"It is a nice view," he agrees, but it is not his particular view that he deems important. "What is important is the world's view of the region as a tourist destination."

It is the reason why we are here. Way back on January 18, when the Cochin Port Trust and Kerala Tourist Board capped months of discussions by signing a port agreement with the race's organisers, it was another step in their mission to make Kerala a location of choice for the world's travellers.

"This race will enhance our visibility to the world," Ramachandran added. "It is a unique part of the world and we want to show that through building a race village that can accommodate this race on its first visit to Asia."

To that end, the operation has been enormous.

The Cochin site, stretched across more than two acres, has undergone the kind of facelift that an ageing film star would pay millions for. In this case the surgery has cost 300 million rupees, roughly 4.7 million EUR at today's exchange rate.

It has gone towards renovating a 40,000-square foot building to serve as the race office and media centre; a 60,000-square foot exhibition centre; and a programme of events that includes snake-boat racing, lots of music and a daily three-hour dose of cultural performances. Throw in a separate 200 million rupee development of a jetty, and it was a place transformed by the time the race village was inaugurated last night.

"A lot of hard work from a lot of people has gotten the site to this stage," Ramachandran said. "The challenge has been getting it done in time and finding sponsorship in a difficult economic time. A lot of people have worked hard on this."

Indeed, more than 500 people were given temporary employment in the final weeks to create an infrastructure that will support huge crowds of people over the fortnight of the stopover.

"We believe that at least 50,000 to 100,000 people will be visiting the race village on the important dates," Ramachandran revealed. "On the days in between we are expecting at least 50,000 footfalls."

The majority of visitors will be locals and domestic tourists from elsewhere in India, according to Ramachandran, but his hope is that foreigners and teams will discover what Kerala is shouting about. To underline his point, National Geographic Traveller magazine described it as one of the "10 paradises of the world".

So far that reputation has already propelled a healthy tourism industry. In 2007, 5.2 million foreign travellers visited the region, an increase of 20.37% on 2006. And some 66.4 million domestic travellers also visited, representing a 5.92% rise on the previous year.

The early signs for this year are good as well, with the figures from the first half of the year showing a growth of 19.23% against the corresponding data from 2006. But it is the desire for further growth that has motivated the decision to bring the race here.

Specifically, it is the media attention that the event generates. The event is expected to reach more than 1.8 billion TV viewers in more than 180 countries and the exposure has Dr Venu, secretary for Kerala Tourism, relishing the arrival of eight yachts and a flotilla of journalists.

"Apart from being the most high profile water sporting event that India has ever witnessed, the event would offer unparalleled global visibility to Cochin and Kerala," he said. "For nearly two weeks in December, Cochin will bask in the international media limelight."

The international media and all that consume it will get a nice view.

The pace at the front of the fleet is incessant. The leading five are passing Madeira with Loïck Peyron hanging on to a lead of 13.6 miles, making nearly 16 knots of boat speed, ahead of Seb Josse (BT) who has taken back second and who lead last night.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- The eight yachts taking part in the grueling round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race are poised to challenge new seas in a bid to avoid pirates off the coast of Somalia.

For the first time in its 35-year history, the event has included an Asian stop on its itinerary. The traditional second leg from Cape Town to Australia or New Zealand -- a journey of howling storms, fierce seas, biting cold and icebergs -- has been replaced by the unknown dangers awaiting the boats on a 4,450-mile journey to the Indian port of Cochin that begins on Saturday.

Several of the boats suffered storm damage on the first leg, and the crew of Ericsson 3 was busy replacing a keel on Friday, less than 24 hours before the race restarted.

There were tears on the dockside as lines were slipped, and dozens and dozens of messages along the long stretch of sea walls that funneled the record sized fleet to sea – from the simple and direct, to the personal, or the generic ‘Yes We Can’. The atmosphere was everything that makes the Vendée Globe a truly unique experience. More than 300,000 people bid the 30 skippers on their way.
The record entry of 30 boats answered the start gun at 1302hrs (local time/1202GMT) under grey, threatening skies with an awkward swell and 13-18 knots of breeze — the skippers setting off in the knowledge that winds of up to 45 knots await them.

Hugo Boss dismasts following a collision

While located two miles off Les Sables d’Olonne, Alex Thomson was hit by a fishing boat, which rammed into the side of Hugo Boss causing her to dismast. The monohull is now moored in the commercial harbour, where an inspection will be carried out…

It was around 2h30 (local time) on Friday morning that Hugo Boss was struck by a fishing boat, leading to the monohull dismasting and causing some major damage to the starboard side. The boat was towed to the commercial harbour in Les Sables d’Olonne, where she is due to be inspected later today. A press conference will take place this afternoon with Alex Thomson, who will explain what exactly happened and give us more information about the intentions of the Hugo Boss team.

The weather was extremly bad at the start with winds up to 25 knots making it near impossible for most of the ribs to escort the race yachts out to sea. Ericsson 4 got off to a good lead, however with 45000 kms to go, that is no gurantee.

It has been a pretty hectic week for the Puma team. Saturday was the in-port race, or rather both of them. It was a nervous time for all the teams.

We had never officially raced against each other, although there had been some practice racing in the previous week. And it wasn't a great day for racing, with the wind under 10 knots for the whole day, and very shifty. But the first points were at stake, so even though this day did not have much to do with what this race is really about, we all took it very seriously.

How great is MacArthur's achievement?

Ellen MacArthur has single-handedly circumnavigated the globe coping with 20 minutes sleep a night, icebergs and 60 foot waves.

MacArthur crossed the line in second place but just how great an achievement was it?

Very rarely does one come across truly moving stories of individual achievement, as opposed to tragedy. The pictures of Kingfisher's arrival in France last night, and the composure and humility of Ellen, MacArthur have been truly humbling. It was not surprising to see even the hardened news reporters moved by the occasion. Totally inspirational!

NY Marathon, November 02

My land based training schedule this year includes the NY Marathon. The NY marathon is one of the world's great road races, drawing more than 100,000 applicants.

The competition will be tought. The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the the prize money, but also for the chance to excel before two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers.

With 4 months to go ( out of which I will be training in Spain for 8 weeks). Im currently covering about 15km a day, thrice a week and 3 weekly sessions in the gym (with a day off, usually Sundays).

While there are many different ways to train for the NY marathon, I find a 12 hour session every two weeks has worked best for me.

The greatest challenge for a solo skipper is keeping the yacht moving even under daunting conditions. The ever present threat of Icebergs and running into whales, working on deck for more than 14 hrs a day for 200 days is quite a norm... its all about perspective as they say...

Triathlons are a three disciplined event, combining swimming, cycling and running over three main distances.

By breaking up the triathlon into its three key sports (swimming / cycling / running), will enable you to train harder and wiser than if you were to concentrate on just one of the above. This is achieved by breaking down training sessions to enable you to have a good workout, but not to be training over tired or sore muscles, as this will simple result in injury and poor performance.

With three different distances in triathlon, you will need to decide which event you wish to train for.

Sprint distance, suitable for beginners wishing to experience their first triathlon.
Olympic distance, the next stage up, the more common race distance, certainly among elite athletes.
Ironman distance, for those that like to push their bodies and minds to the limit. (Brain Optional).'

SOME BASIC TIPS WHEN PLANNING YOUR TRAINING SESSIONS

Specificity: Ensure that all your training is specific to the event you are training for, don't run mile after mile for a sprint triathlon, ensure that each session has an aim, i.e. endurance run / speed track session.
Progression: The body is a marvelous piece of engineering design, as you train it becomes stronger. However if you maintain the same training level, your body will maintain the same level of improvement. In simple terms, avoid allowing your body to become use to its workouts.
Overload: This must be done carefully, to avoid causing stress on any of your body systems. Listen to your body, if it feels tired let it rest, remember fit bodies are not built in the gym, they are built whilst resting. (This is my excuse for sleeping every afternoon, and I'm sticking to it).
Reversibility: Keep your training regular, if you stop for two weeks, then a lot of the previous work will be lost, make time for training, but avoid letting it take over your life, triathlete's have a high divorce level.
Tedium: One of the reasons a lot of good triathlete's come from a different sporting background. Keep your training interesting and varied to keep motivation high. Train with new partners, do different runs i.e. track sessions, hill sprints, fartleg, off road, sand dunes, treadmill - try spin classes anything that will keep your mind and body working.

Inside an America's Cup team: Keeping Alinghi's crew fit

Just like in any other elite professional sport, physical fitness of the crew of an America's Cup team is a key factor in its success. Not only do crew have to be excellent sailors they also have to be physically fit and strong in order to carry out their physically demanding duties.

A usual day at Alinghi's base in Valencia would start at around 7:30am when the first sailors come to the gym to train but the bulk of the team trains at around 9am for approximately an hour and a half. Then all sailors will continue with the preparation of the boat for the day's training session, usually scheduled at 12pm. If sailing takes place earlier at 10am, there is no prior gym session. As we mentioned, physical training is shaped according to the team's sailing activities. The gym session doesn't radically differ from that of any other sports team and mainly consists of the typical weight lifting and more specialized training with the use of sophisticated Tecnogym machines.

After three failed attempts to leave on my Atlantic crossing from La Gomera, I decided to try leaving from the Island of El Heirro - the last of the Canary Islands, where the currents were easier to escape from. I met Ann-Sophie, from Finland on the Island of El Hierro on the pier, while I was preparing the boat for the Atlantic crossing.

We met up almost 8 months later in Stockholm where she interviewed me for her radio station in Finland. Dont we meet interesting people in strange places? :)

Its been quite a hectic 5 months since the start of the year. They say getting to the starting point is the hardest part...and the end of the checklist remains elusive.

Sailing is a challenge balance between project management and maintaining top physical condition on land and training at sea.

Sailing in this part of the world (Asia) still largely an aspirational sport. Sailing events in Asia remain few and far between, yet judging from the response to the teams campaign, this may be just the reason for its appeal.

An involvement in sailing is good for business. Some companies, such as Hardy's, Volvo, Skandia, HSBC Private Bank and Rolex have recognized this, while many others are still to discover the benefits of an involvement in this sport.

André Oszmann, Skandia Group Marketing Director, sums up many of the attributes of sailing:

Ocean Based Training:
This will consist of sailing in heavy weather conditions in Argentina (the Southern Ocean), Scotland (North Atlantic) and India (Indian Ocean). The aim is to identify and prepare for equipment, design and performance challenges that he will encounter in the Southern Ocean.

Technical Training:
Thousands of miles from land, forces any skipper to be self reliant and capable of carrying out repairs on mission critical equipment such as the desalinator, power generator, sails and mast. The checklist of tasks includes, spares, backup and emergency procedures.

Land-based training:
This has been designed to optimize his physical condition so that Bhavik is in the best shape to withstand all the physical challenges.The program includes events such as the London & NY Marathons.

fter a three-day odyssey from New Zealand, one of the world’s largest planes, with its very special cargo – the hull of Telefonica Black – was welcomed by a crowd of Spanish journalists, photographers and the Telefonica team’s shore and sailing crew.

The hull emerged from its Antonov cocoon to be carefully lifted on to a truck for the nine km journey to the Telefonica base at the harbour in Alicante, host for the start of the 2008-09 race on 4 October.

The shore crew now plan to have the first of the two Spanish entries in the water by next week after finishing the rig and completing the commissioning.

The arrival in Spain of Telefonica Black marks the culmination of approximately 40,000 man hours of work by a team of 60 people – the boat builders, the Telefónica technical and design teams.

Challenging a sailor’s every ounce of energy and adrenalin, the Open 60 is one of the fastest monohull classes in the world. Moreover this is a class that continues to evolve, explores new design innovations and technology and sets the standards for other classes. The development of the rig in this class is no exception. David Barnaby, a designer for Southern Spars, who resides in Europe, explores some of the advancements in rig design and technology.
Since the inception of the Open 60 class many rig geometries have been developed and presently there are three popular configurations. However several common factors are crucial to a rig’s success regardless of geometry; reliability, rig control, and weight.
Reliability – Crucial in any round the world race, but particularly in the Vendee as a single-handed masthead climb is not easy unless you are an octopus, and being a non-stop race, any unreliable equipment will likely be a handicap for 3 months. With any round the world race there is much talk prior regarding weight savings, and yet for the year after there are many grumblings about reliability.
Control – the key being that the skipper controls the rig and not vice versa. Stiffness without excess weight is crucial. Geometry is also an important factor for all sail configurations because if any of these combinations are compromised by a lack of rig stability, then the performance is less than optimum. In previous generations the rigs have been super light and consequently soft, which has been a function of the ‘no rule’ limit on mast weight. As a result, the yacht experienced poor upwind performance due in part to massive headstay sag. With the development of lighter rigging, stiffer boats, better rig geometries and centreboards, the class has started to attract more attention for its upwind capabilities. Being able to gybe with slackened runners is also a design prerequisite.
Weight – a function of the rule is that if all boats were identical apart from the rig then the boat with the lightest rig would theoretically have the greatest righting moment and therefore potentially be the fastest. This is unlike Volvo or Americas’ Cup where all rigs weigh the same and the only performance gain is drag. History has proven that if applied correctly, righting moment is king.
The Rig Geometries
1) Classic non-rotating rig geometry – 2, 3 or 4 fixed spreaders generally produce the lightest possible package. These rigs provide good control throughout the various sail configurations. Occasionally we see these spreaders able to rotate which eases the torque induced by the mainsail during a gybe.
2) Swinging spreader wing – this has been popularised by the Ecover style package, featuring one or more swinging spreaders, which gives the drag reduction of a wing but has the more ‘locked on’ control characteristics of a classic rig.
3) Deck spreader wing – this is a low drag option due to minimal rigging. The chainplates, being at the end of wide deck spreaders, allow wide shroud angles. This geometry is probably the heaviest option, however interestingly provides the lowest VCG and heeling moment as the deck spreaders are heavy but low down. This geometry has a tendency for instability fore and aft as it is not locked in with spreaders. The only way to stabilise this is by having a longer chord length mast which adds weight. A nice product of the deck spreader geometry is the ability to sheet the reaching sails off the deck struts. http://www.southernspars.com/

Circumnavigation history

To circumnavigate a place, such as an island, a continent, or the Earth, is to travel all the way around it by boat or ship. More recently, the term has also been used to cover aerial round-the-world flights.

World circumnavigation

A basic definition of a world circumnavigation would be a route which covers at least a great circle, and in particular one which passes through at least one pair of points antipodal to each other. In practice, different definitions of world circumnavigation are used, in order to accommodate practical constraints depending on the method of circumnavigation.

Nautical

The map on the right shows, in red, a typical sailing circumnavigation of the world by the trade winds and the Suez and Panama canals; overlaid in yellow are the points antipodal to all points on the route. It can be seen that the route roughly approximates a great circle, and passes through two pairs of antipodal points. This is a route followed by many cruising sailors; the use of the trade winds makes it a relatively easy sail, although it passes through a number of zones of calms or light winds.

In yacht racing, a round-the-world route approximating a great circle would be quite impractical, particularly in a non-stop race where use of the Panama and Suez Canals would be impossible. Yacht racing therefore defines a world circumnavigation to be a passage of at least 21,600 nautical miles (40,000 km) in length which crosses the equator, crosses every meridian in the same direction and finishes in the same port as it starts. The map on the left shows the route of the Vendée Globe round-the-world race in red; overlaid in yellow are the points antipodal to all points on the route. It can be seen that the route does not pass through any pairs of antipodal points. Since the winds in the lower latitudes predominantly blow west-to-east it can be seen that there is an easier route (west-to-east) and a harder route (east-to-west) when circumnavigating by sail; this difficulty is magnified for square-rig vessels..

Since the advent of world cruises in 1922, by Cunard's Lanconia, thousands of people have completed circumnavigations of the globe at a more leisurely pace. Typically, these voyages begin in New York City or Southampton, and proceed westward. Routes vary, either travelling through the Caribbean and then into the Pacific Ocean via the Panama Canal, or around Cape Horn. From there ships usually make their way to Hawaii, the islands of the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, then northward to Hong Kong, South East Asia, and India. At that point, again, routes may vary: one way is through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean; the other is around the Cape of Good Hope and then up the west coast of Africa. These cruises end in the port where they began.

Aviation

Aviation records take account of the wind circulation patterns of the world; in particular the jet streams, which circulate in the northern and southern hemispheres without crossing the equator. There is therefore no requirement to cross the equator, or to pass through two antipodal points, in the course of setting a round-the-world aviation record. Thus, for example, Steve Fosset's global circumnavigation by balloon was entirely contained within the southern hemisphere.

For powered aviation, the course of a round-the-world record must start and finish at the same point and cross all meridians; the course must be at least 36,787.559 kilometres (22,858.729 mi) long (which is the length of the Tropic of Cancer). The course must include set control points at latitudes outside the Arctic and Antarctic circles.

In ballooning, which is totally at the mercy of the winds, the requirements are even more relaxed. The course must cross all meridians, and must include a set of checkpoints which are all outside of two circles, chosen by the pilot, having radii of 3,335.85 kilometres (2,072.80 mi) and enclosing the poles (though not necessarily centred on them).

Surface Travel

There is one successful polar circumnavigation journey; tracing a great circle around the globe 'vertically' i.e. through both poles. Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Charles Burton and their team successfully completed the Transglobe Expedition between 1979 and 1982. Transglobe was the first polar circumnavigation by surface travel, touching two true antipodes: the two poles of the Earth. They approximated the great circle passing through Greenwich, covering 52,000 miles in the process. "To the Ends of the Earth" is the classic book which describes this journey.

Human Powered

Thomas Stevens was the first person to circle the globe by bicycle. The feat was accomplished between 1884 and 1886. While impressive at the time, a good portion of the trip was by steamer due to technical and political reasons.

To date no one has completed a human powered circumnavigation according to the guidelines set by Guinness World Records. However, in 2006, Colin Angus and Julie Wafaei completed a circumnavigation of the northern hemisphere entirely by human power, although Julie was with him for only part of the trip as she finished what Tim Harvey had started. Although Angus did not cross the equator, National Geographic Adventure Magazine honored Angus' achievement in human powered circumnavigation.

According to his Expedition 360 website, Jason Lewis is on track to complete the first antipodal circumnavigation by human power, but since his trip has involved non human powered travel between legs it still does not qualify under the Guinness rules as human powered circumnavigation.

Notable global maritime circumnavigations

Ferdinand Magellan, 1511–1521 (multiple voyages). In 1511 he visited the Moluccas (3°9′S 129°23′E). He returned to Portugal and set out in 1519 to circumnavigate the globe. He discovered and sailed through the Strait of Magellan and reached the Philippines in 1521, where he was killed on Cebu (10°5′S 123°33′E). It should be noted, however, that Magellan did not personally complete a circumnavigation of the Earth, as was once often erroneously taught to school children.

Enrique of Malacca, ?–1521, Magellan's interpreter (multiple voyages). He was captured in Sumatra as a child and taken to the Moluccas where he was sold to Magellan in 1511; he accompanied Magellan on his circumnavigation and ended up on Cebu in the Philippines.

The 18 survivors of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition (which began with 5 ships and 200 men), 1519–1522, in the Victoria. After Magellan died in the Philippines in 1521, the circumnavigation was completed under the command of the Basque seafarer Juan Sebastián Elcano who returned to Seville on 8 September 1522 after a journey of 3 years and 1 month. They were the first to circumnavigate the globe in a single expedition.

The survivors of García Jofre de Loaysa's Spanish expedition, 1525–1536. None of Loaysa's seven ships completed the voyage, but Santa María de la Victoria reached the Moluccas before being wrecked in a Portuguese attack. Fernando de la Torre and eight survivors return to Spain on a Portuguese ship.

Andrés de Urdaneta, another Basque, completed a nine-year journey circumnavigating the globe in 1528.

Francis Drake, 1577–1580, in Golden Hind. Discovered the Drake Passage but entered the Pacific via the Strait of Magellan.

Notable aerial circumnavigations

United States Army Air Service, 1924, first aerial circumnavigation, 175 days, covering 44,360 kilometres (27,553 miles).

LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin, 1929, piloted by Hugo Eckener set a record for the fastest aerial circumnavigation, 21 days, which was also the first circumnavigation in an airship.

On July 1, 1931, pilot Wiley Post and navigator Harold Gatty completed their circumnavigation of the world in a Lockheed Vega aeroplane, Winnie Mae, in 8 days, 15 hours and 51 minutes; the record for fastest circumnavigation was once again held by an aeroplane.

In 1932 Wolfgang von Gronau flew around the World with a twin engine Dornier seaplane, Gronland-Wal D-2053, in nearly four months, making 44 stops en route. He was accompanied by co-pilot Gerth von Roth, mechanic Franzl Hack, and radio operator Frtiz Albrecht.

In 1933 Wiley Post repeated his circumnavigation by aeroplane, but this time solo, using an autopilot and radio direction finder. He made the first solo aerial circumnavigation in a time one day faster than his previous record: 7 days, 19 hours, 49 minutes, in which he covered 25,110 kilometres (15,596 mi).

In 1949 the United States Air Force B-50 Superfortress Lucky Lady II made the first non-stop aerial circumnavigation in 94 hours and 1 minute. Four in-air refuelings were required for the flight, which covered 37,743 kilometres (23,452 mi).

In 1961 Yuri Gagarin made the first human flight in space, and completed the first orbit of the Earth, in Vostok 1.

Fictional circumnavigations

The most famous circumnavigation never happened. This is the story told in Jules Verne's 1872 science fiction novel, Around the World in Eighty Days. Upper class Englishman Phileas Fogg and his servant Passerpartou use a variety of transportation means and ingenuity to accomplish the adventurous feat. The book was freely adapted by Mike Todd into an Academy Award winning movie of the same name in 1956, starring David Niven and Cantinflas. The book (especially) and the movie are tributes to the new transportation possibilities of the early Industrial Revolution, with the coming of steamships, railways, etc. As this circumnavigation did not cross the Equator or reach antipodal points, it would not have been recognized by Guinness Records as an official circumnavigation (if such a thing had existed at that time).
